n Jerry, a lifelong secular Jew whose first language was Yiddish, was one of the founding members of the Secular Jewish Association in 1969. He has been active in the Secular Humanistic Jewish movement since his teen years, has served on various committees, and has written and spoken extensively about Secular Judaism.
n From 1975 to 1988, Jerry was chair of the Congress of Secular Jewish Organizations, a North American federation of independent Jewish groups. He subsequently was appointed to the position of Madrikh by the Leadership Conference of Secular Humanistic Jews.

n Jerry is a Professor in the Department of Medicine with a cross-appointment in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Toronto. He is an endocrinologist on staff in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Toronto's Mount Sinai Hospital. His major area of academic activity has been in reproductive and sexual medicine, particularly in the male. He has conducted research, written and lectured on this and related topics. In 2000, HarperCollins published Jerry's book for the general public entitled, "So Your Child is Gay". Early in 2002, he was elected President of the Canadian Andropause Society, a professional society devoted to the metabolic study of the aging male. In his "spare time", and combining his expertise in both medicine and philosophy, Jerry is Course Director at York University for a third year credit, "Health Ethics".

n Jerry's wife, Sheila, was active in the formative years of the SJA, particularly in the Sunday School where she was a principal. Their four children, Hilary, Zachary, Raoul and Cale, are all graduates of the SJA Sunday School (forerunner of Oraynu Children's School).
