Sunday, June 3rd (Dinner at 5:30 pm; lecture at 6:45 pm)
Tamari Hall, Lipa Green Building, 4600 Bathurst (adjacent to the Prosserman JCC)
Oraynu Congregation welcomes you to join us.
Our internationally respected guest
PROFESSOR DEREK PENSLAR
will address
Israel: A State of Exception?
Prof. Penslar ponders on why Israel is so central in the media; why so harshly criticized? Is it because of what Israel really is and does or because of how people perceive it? The answers to these questions are complex and surprising. They tell us as much about the diaspora as about Israel, and as much about Christianity and Islam as about Judaism and Jews.
Derek Penslar is an internationally respected academic and a sought-after speaker. He is currently the Samuel Zacks Professor of Jewish History at University of Toronto and soon to be Professor of Israel Studies at University of Oxford, England. His many publications focus on Jewish life and history in modern Europe and in Israel. His insight and innovative approach make Prof. Penslar a superb teacher.
Open only to Oraynu members, their guests and friends of Oraynu -- a unique opportunity.
About the Davida Glazer Memorial Program Fund
Davida Glazer, our late Board member and a friend to so many in our community had an abiding commitment to Jewish culture and education. Oraynu established the Davida Glazer Memorial Program in 2004 to hold regular events that honour Davida by sustaining what what important to her. Donations to this fund are welcome at any time and will help sustain this worthy program. With your generous support, the Fund's next event will be an exciting weekend seminar on Jewish culture, June 7-9, 2013.
