Oraynu's Show Your Heart Weekend
FEBRUARY 11-12, 2012
Oraynu's Tikkun Olam and Fund Raising committees joined together to offer “Show Your Heart Weekend” on February 11-12. It was a terrific success as approximately 180 Oraynuniks and friends of all ages 'Showed Our Hearts' by participating in gemilut chesedim, many acts of loving kindness.
Here is what we accomplished:
- We volunteered at the Scott Mission, the Good Shepherd Ministry and Ve-ahavta.
- We packed 192 backpacks for Beth Emeth's and Beth Sholom's Out of the Cold clients, and delivered boxes of toiletries to two
shelters for women, teens and children.
- By staying awake all night, 12 teens and 2 adults kept our promise to collectively do 24 hours of community service and
education.
- We learned about homelessness and poverty from 'Voices from the Street' - individuals who use their personal experiences to
educate the public.
- We did fund-raising and, so far, have received over $7000.00 in donations.
We made a difference and had fun!
YOU CAN STILL DONATE!! Your financial support is greatly appreciated.

OUR MISSION
Every night over 5,000 people in Toronto go to sleep homeless. More than 400 of them live on the street. Out of the Cold (OOTC) is a program sponsored by local charitable and religious organizations that provide meals and beds for many of these individuals.
Oraynu directly supports two OOTC programs, one at Beth Emeth Bais Yehuda Synagogue where our B'nai Mitzvah volunteer, and one at Beth Sholom Synagogue. January through March, a team of Oraynuniks volunteer at Beth Sholom, which once a week hosts 170 homeless guests for dinner, art activities, games, a sing-along, and nursing and housing consultations. About 60 guests stay for a bed, breakfast, and box lunch. The cost for one dinner alone is $1,500. One full night costs $4,000 when overhead and staff are included.
Oraynu's Education Fund supports the teaching of humanistic values that emphasize the dignity of every human being and the richness of Jewish culture and community in our lives. It subsidizes adult lectures, which cost up to $700, and school-wide education programs such as our family seder which reaches over 150 people at a cost of $2,000. This year we require a new projector system for family and adult programs, which will cost approximately $1,800.
All funds raised will be divided equally between Out of the Cold and our own Education Fund.
