Who We Are

Founded in 1969 as the Secular Jewish Association, Oraynu Congregation is based on the cultural and philosophical ideals of the Jewish Enlightenment (Haskalah) that originated more than 200 years ago. Ideological, ceremonial and educational leadership is provided by ordained Rabbis and Madrikhim/Madrikhot (Leaders).

Meaningful Judaism — without God

Oraynu is a welcoming community founded on secular humanistic ideals and dedicated to enhancing our Jewish heritage and identity. We celebrate and explore our rich Jewish culture and history without religious dogma or appeals for supernatural intervention, understanding Judaism in the context of human history. We look to human reason and human power as our fundamental vehicles for improving the world.  We seek to live in integrity with what we believe.

Humanistic Judaism is unique among modern Jewish movements in combining Jewish traditions, holidays and practices with Humanist philosophy and non-theistic liturgy.

We provide an inclusive home for Jews and their family members, including multifaith, multicultural and multiracial households, LGBTQ2S+, and those of partial Jewish ancestry. We believe deeply in human dignity and equality and the need to work for social justice.

Oraynu celebrates Shabbat, High Holidays and Jewish festivals; we offer adult education, cultural events, youth programs and have a wonderful Children’s School; we get involved in social action and tzedakah; we mark the passages of life with beautiful ceremonies.

We invite you to join us and make Oraynu part of your Jewish journey.
